This policy explains how the Society for Ethnographic Theory (SET), which publishes HAU Books, handles personal data on haubooks.org and in its publishing work. SET is the data controller.
What we collect
We collect personal data only when you give it to us:
- Newsletter: your email address, if you sign up.
- Book shipments: your name and postal address, if you give them so we can send you a book.
- Submissions and author work: your name, contact details, affiliation, biography, and manuscript, plus the information in any author questionnaire.
- Correspondence: your name, email address, and whatever you include in your message.
What we don’t do
We don’t use analytics or advertising trackers, build visitor profiles, or sell personal data.
Who can see your data
- Newsletter addresses are held in Mailchimp, which sends our newsletter and may process data outside the UK and EU under its own safeguards.
- Shipping addresses are used only by our editorial team to send your book, and are passed to a postal or courier service only as needed for delivery.
- Submissions are shared in confidence with those involved in assessing and producing the work: our editorial team and committees, peer reviewers, and freelancers such as copyeditors, translators, indexers, and designers. They may use this information only for that work.
- Published details, such as an author’s name and biography, become public when a book is announced or published, and are shared with our distributors and booksellers.
Cookies and embedded services
The site uses only a small cookie to remember that you have seen our cookie notice, and login cookies for site administrators. Fonts are loaded from Google, so your browser shares your IP address with Google when a page loads. Links to sites such as the University of Chicago Press or Amazon are governed by those sites’ own policies.
Why we use your data and for how long
We rely on your consent for the newsletter, and on our legitimate interests or steps needed to fulfil an agreement for shipping, correspondence, and publishing. We keep data only as long as we need it for these purposes or to meet legal and contractual obligations. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in every email.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR, you can ask to access, correct, delete, restrict, or transfer your data, object to its use, or withdraw consent. To do so, please contact us below. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk) or your local data protection authority.
